About Puerto Rico
Even though Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, Puerto Ricans face challenges that many Americans do not. Over 45% of the population live below the poverty line, making it significantly poorer than the poorest U.S. state of Mississippi. Half of the island relies on food stamps. Many homes are headed by females, and of those families, 61% of them live in poverty. Youths grow up deprived of material security as well as a male role model. Only 11% of the population have a college degree, while 62% fail to complete secondary school – the highest dropout rate in the USA. These low education levels are profoundly linked to unemployment, poverty, and crime issues.
In addition, Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico in September 2017. Millions of people were left without electricity, with limited access to clean water, and with damaged homes. While supplies and assistance have been arriving to the island since the hurricane, help will be needed for years to come to rebuild Puerto Rico.
Prior to the hurricane, Group International Mission Trips had strong relationships with mayors and local churches in several municipalities, and never has the time been so right for those strong relationships to shine. We will be working with closely with the mayors and the churches to provide much needed assistance to hurricane victims, whether that will be through distributing food and supplies, or identifying which homes are in need of critical repair and providing teams to help with painting, roof repair, debris clean-up, or whatever else is needed.
